Life during the HIV/AIDS epidemic in southern and eastern Africa

Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.

What it meant for ordinary people

HIV spread widely in eastern and southern Africa from the 1980s, and by the early 2000s about one in five adults in South Africa was infected. Life expectancy fell by a decade or more until antiretroviral drugs became widely available after about 2005.

Deaths: about 20 million or more in sub-Saharan Africa.

How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from our model, estimated from the sources.
