1965–1966
Life during the Indonesian mass killings of 1965–66
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
After a failed coup in 1965, the army and allied militias killed hundreds of thousands of accused communists and others, and held hundreds of thousands more without trial. Suharto's New Order took power, and the killings went unacknowledged for decades.
Deaths: about 500,000 to 1 million.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
