1975–1979
Life during the Cambodian genocide
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
The Khmer Rouge emptied the cities in 1975 and forced the whole population into rural labour camps, abolishing money, schools and religion. Execution, starvation and disease killed about a quarter of Cambodians before Vietnam's invasion in 1979.
Deaths: about 1.5–2 million, roughly a quarter of the population.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
