1949–1990
Life during the Division of Germany
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
Germany was split into a Western democracy and a Soviet-aligned East from 1949 until reunification in 1990. About 3.5 million people left the East before the Berlin Wall went up in 1961; after that, crossing was rare and dangerous.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from our model, estimated from the sources.
