Life during the Bangladesh Liberation War
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
When Pakistan's army cracked down on Bengali nationalists in March 1971, it killed civilians, Hindus and intellectuals and committed mass rape. Bangladesh became independent in December after India entered the war.
Deaths: estimates range from about 300,000 to 3 million; about 10 million refugees fled to India.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
