Life during the China's reform and opening
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
From 1978, Deng Xiaoping's reforms returned farming to households, opened special economic zones and let markets set prices. Hundreds of millions left poverty, and about 250–300 million rural migrants moved to cities, often without the right to settle there.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from our model, estimated from the sources.
