Life during the Cultural Revolution

Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.

What it meant for ordinary people

Mao launched the Cultural Revolution in 1966 to purge rivals, and students formed Red Guards who attacked teachers, officials and anyone with the wrong class background. About 17 million urban youth were sent to the countryside, and education stopped for a decade.

Deaths: estimates range from about 500,000 to 2 million.

How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
