Born Then
1952–1961

Life during the Egyptian revolution of 1952 and land reform

Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.

What it meant for ordinary people

The Free Officers overthrew King Farouk in 1952, and Nasser's government broke up large estates, nationalised the Suez Canal in 1956 and much of the economy in 1961. Peasants gained land and schools; the old landed elite and foreign communities lost out.

How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from our model, estimated from the sources.
