Life during the Second Congo War

Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.

What it meant for ordinary people

Nine African countries and many militias fought in Congo from 1998, partly over its minerals. Most deaths came from disease and hunger among displaced people; violence in the east continued long after the 2003 peace deal.

Deaths: estimates range widely, from under 1 million to over 5 million, mostly from disease and hunger.

How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
