Life during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami

Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.

What it meant for ordinary people

A magnitude 9.1 earthquake off Sumatra on 26 December 2004 sent waves across the Indian Ocean. Aceh in Indonesia was hit hardest; coastal fishing communities in Sri Lanka, India and Thailand also suffered heavy losses.

Deaths: about 230,000 across 14 countries, about 170,000 of them in Indonesia.

How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
