Life during the World War I in Europe

Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.

What it meant for ordinary people

Most men of fighting age in the warring European states were mobilised, and about one in eight of those who served died. At home, rationing, rising prices and the absence of men changed daily life, and women took over farm and factory work.

Deaths: about 9–10 million soldiers and 6–7 million civilians across all fronts.

How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
