Life during the Atrocities in the Congo Free State

Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.

What it meant for ordinary people

King Leopold II of Belgium ruled the Congo as a personal possession and forced its people to collect rubber and ivory, enforced by hostage-taking, mutilation and killing. Together with famine, disease and falling births, the population fell sharply. International outrage forced Belgium to take over the colony in 1908.

Deaths: estimates range widely, from about 1 million to 10 million or more; most deaths were from disease, hunger and flight.

How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from our model, estimated from the sources.
