Life during the Maji Maji Rebellion

Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.

What it meant for ordinary people

People across southern German East Africa rose against forced cotton growing and taxes. German forces answered with a scorched-earth policy, and the famine that followed killed far more than the fighting.

Deaths: about 75,000 to 300,000, most from the famine that followed.

How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
