Life during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia, Burma and Vietnam

Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.

What it meant for ordinary people

Japan replaced the European colonial rulers in 1942, requisitioning rice and drafting millions of labourers. Famine followed in Java and in northern Vietnam in 1944–45; the occupation also opened the way for independence movements.

Deaths: about 2–4 million in Indonesia including forced labourers and famine, and about 1–2 million in the 1945 famine in northern Vietnam.

How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
