1532–1572
Life during the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
Francisco Pizarro captured the Inca Atahualpa at Cajamarca in 1532 and executed him the next year. Inca resistance continued from Vilcabamba until 1572. Under Spanish rule the Andean labour draft, the mita, sent hundreds of thousands to the silver mines of Potosí.
Deaths: unknown; war, forced labour and disease reduced the Andean population by well over half by 1600.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
