Life during the Smallpox in the Inca Empire
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
Smallpox spread south ahead of the Spanish and reached the Inca Empire in the mid-1520s. It killed the ruler Huayna Capac and his chosen heir. The succession war between his sons Huáscar and Atahualpa followed, just as Pizarro arrived.
Deaths: unknown; perhaps several hundred thousand or more, including the Inca Huayna Capac.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
