1591–1599
Life during the Moroccan invasion of the Songhai Empire
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
In 1591 a Moroccan army with firearms crossed the Sahara and defeated the much larger Songhai army at Tondibi. Gao and Timbuktu were taken, and leading scholars were deported to Morocco. The Songhai Empire broke up, and the Niger bend fell into decades of disorder.
Deaths: unknown.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from our model, estimated from the sources.
