1529–1543
Life during the Ethiopian–Adal war
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
In 1529 Imam Ahmad ibn Ibrahim of the Adal Sultanate, using Ottoman muskets, defeated the Ethiopian emperor and overran most of the highlands. Churches and monasteries were burned. With Portuguese help, the Ethiopians killed Ahmad in battle in 1543 and drove Adal back.
Deaths: unknown.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from our model, estimated from the sources.
