Life during the Slavery in the United States

Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.

What it meant for ordinary people

In 1860 about four million people, nearly one in three in the South, were legally owned by others. About a million were sold or moved from the Upper South to the cotton states. The simulation makes the poorest fifth enslaved with high probability, which is closest to the South; in the North almost no one was enslaved after the 1820s. The Thirteenth Amendment ended slavery in 1865.

Deaths: about 4 million people were enslaved in 1860.

How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from recorded statistics.
