Life during the American Civil War

Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.

What it meant for ordinary people

Eleven slave states seceded and fought the Union for four years. About one in five white Southern men of military age died; about 180,000 Black soldiers served in the Union army. Union victory ended slavery in 1865.

Deaths: about 620,000 to 750,000 soldiers, plus civilians.

How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
