Life during the Paraguayan War (War of the Triple Alliance)
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
Paraguay fought Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay in the bloodiest war in South American history. Paraguay lost a large share of its people and most of its men; the death risk here is an average and was far higher in Paraguay than in the allied countries.
Deaths: about 150,000 to 500,000 by different estimates, most of them Paraguayans.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
