Life during the Northern Chinese Famine

Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.

What it meant for ordinary people

A drought linked to a strong El Niño ruined harvests across northern China. Roads were poor, the Qing state was weakened, and relief arrived too late. The multiplier is a national average; in Shanxi perhaps a third of the population died.

Deaths: about 9 to 13 million in Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Hebei and Shaanxi.

How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
