1211–1234
Life during the Mongol conquest of the Jin
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
Genghis Khan attacked the Jurchen Jin dynasty in 1211 and took its capital Zhongdu (now Beijing) in 1215. The war went on until the Jin fell in 1234. Cities that resisted were often massacred, and north China lost a large share of its people.
Deaths: registered households in north China fell by more than half; deaths are estimated in the millions.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from scholarly estimates.
