190–280
Life during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
After the Han dynasty broke up, the warlords Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Quan and their heirs fought for China until the Jin reunified it in 280. Farmers were drafted, forced onto military colonies or driven off their land. Census counts collapsed, partly from death and partly because people slipped out of the registers.
Deaths: registered population fell from about 56 million (157) to about 16 million (280); much of the drop was flight and lost registers.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from our model, estimated from the sources.
