632–750
Life during the Early Muslim conquests
Be born in a place it hit, a few years before it began, and see what it did to five ordinary lives.
What it meant for ordinary people
Within a century of Muhammad's death in 632, Arab armies took the Levant, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, North Africa, Spain and parts of Central Asia. Many towns surrendered on terms and kept their churches and synagogues under a poll tax. Conversion to Islam among ordinary people came slowly over the following centuries.
Deaths: unknown; most cities surrendered on terms, but some battles and sieges were large.
How hard it hits each person in the game (risk of death, of being conscripted, of leaving) comes from our model, estimated from the sources.
